Our good friends the Surrey True Blues ran an "Evening with The Rangers Legend Willie Henderson" at the Eagle Pub, Tamworth Road, Croydon CR0 1XW on Saturday 6th June 2009.
Willie was a very entertaining player and is now an excellent speaker. It was great listening to all his football recollections which raised many a laugh. There was also a question and answer session with some very good questions asked. A number of things auctioned at the event included signed Arthur Numan and Andy Goram shirts. Willie Henderson had time for everyone. What a superstar!
The evening ended with the singing of Rangers songs.
My only disappointment was that very few London Branch members were in attendance. Those that were not there missed a great evening. Thanks to Woody, Gerry and all the Surrey True Blues for making me feel so welcome.
For younger members Willie Henderson was the outside right of the great Rangers team of the early to mid sixties. Some lines taken from "Rangers Player By Player" include "As popular with Ibrox fans as any player in modern times, Willie Henderson was at least the equal of any of the great wingers who have graced Rangers' long history. He was an outside right of the most tremendous pace, muscled and closely coupled at 5' 4" like the sprinter he was. He could weave through a warren of defence, a maze of defenders, as he pleased, to the extreme delight of the fans." He made his debut for Scotland at the age of 18 years 269 days. A world class player.
